Airbnb, hotel, rental

Two minutes on arrival. A clear report.

Scout looks for cameras and mics connected to the rental's Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth devices nearby. It also says honestly what it cannot see.

What Scout detects

  • Wi-Fi cameras: RTSP streams, ONVIF, known brands (Hikvision, Dahua, Wyze…), doorbells
  • Mics and voice assistants announced on the network
  • Bluetooth devices in range, even off the Wi-Fi
  • Any new device joining the network during your stay

What no app can see

  • 4G / SIM cameras, not linked to the Wi-Fi
  • Memory-card recorders with no connection at all
  • Wired mics and analogue cameras linked to a local recorder

Built-in tip: re-read the listing — Airbnb bans cameras in private spaces and requires declaring the others.

Under the hood

Standard protocols, no magic.

  • ONVIF

    Discovers cameras that announce themselves on the network (WS-Discovery).

  • RTSP

    Probes port 554: a video stream that answers is a camera.

  • Bonjour / SSDP

    Services announced by devices: printers, TVs, speakers, cameras.

  • Bluetooth

    Radar of nearby devices, including those not on the Wi-Fi.

  • MAC / fabricant

    Manufacturer identification, with a list of known camera brands.

  • ICMP / TCP

    Ping and open ports to map the whole local network.

Monitoring

A stranger joins the Wi-Fi? You'll know.

Scans at regular intervals, an alert for every new device, history compared scan by scan: score, device count, cameras.
